Community Leaders Testimonials

Lynne FruechtingHealth Ministries Clinic is a safety-net clinic located in Newton, serving patients from 4 counties. We rely heavily on the volunteer efforts of 6 Family Medicine physicians from Wichita Clinic-Bethel, which is our local Wichita Clinic branch. They give us their half-day off once a month. We also have 2 retired Wichita Clinic doctors who continue to see patients here, and several other physicians will see our patients in their offices. These physicians share their time and expertise out of a desire to give to those less fortunate. Without their contributions, many of these patients would be without care.

When we decided to move to Wichita in 1985 I was apprehensive. I grew up in Michigan and did not know what a reservoir was. I had never seen a cattle ranch, the Flint Hills or an orange sunset on the prairie. On my way back from Italy last week, I looked forward to the wide open spaces, friendly people and the easiness of life in the heartland. My children are grown now, with a world -class education provided by the International Baccalaureate Program in the Wichita public schools. They know hard work, diversity and, best of all, themselves. I know that this would be a lot to hope for in any community, but here it is. Join us.

We moved to Wichita from Washington, D.C., with two preschoolers and a fuzzy dog in June of 1979, during the height of the first national trucker strike. Although none of our belongings arrived for nearly a month, the Wichita Clinic medical staff families rushed to our aid with everything from lamps to mattresses to chicken dinners. Wichita felt like home. Commuting was a breeze. We could fly from the middle of the country in any direction, exploring regions we might have missed, had we remained on either coast. Our children received an excellent education, made lifelong friends, and elected to stay in Kansas while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at KU. As an artist I’ve had the chance to participate in many exhibitions. Cultural events abound, as well as leadership opportunities with the chance to make an impact on the community. Wichita is everything we could have wished for—and more.
